Are you looking for a way to boost your home's air quality and energy efficiency? Installing a new AC unit is one of the best investments you can make as a homeowner. Not only will it improve the comfort of your home, but you'll also save money on energy bills.

In this blog post, we'll take an in-depth look at why now might be the perfect time to consider replacing or upgrading your existing AC system - from exploring cost-saving measures to uncovering potential health benefits.

How to Know It's Time to Replace Your AC

With summer’s scorching temperatures fast approaching, it's important to have a fully functioning AC unit to keep you cool and comfortable. Waiting until July or August to address any AC problems may result in longer wait times for available technicians to make the installation, and you may end up paying top dollar for a new unit due to higher demand.

Signs you may need a new air conditioner for your home:

  • Your AC is not cooling your home properly.
  • Your AC is making strange noises.
  • Your AC is leaking.
  • Your AC is not blowing cold air.
  • Your AC is not turning on.
  • Your AC is using more energy than usual.
  • Your AC is more than 10 years old.

As an HVAC specialist, I understand that deciding when to replace your AC can be challenging. At Moe Plumbing, we always recommend a replacement when repair costs approach or exceed the price of a new unit or when repairs won't provide a long-term solution. We take pride in helping our customers make informed decisions and never pressure them into buying unnecessary products or services.

Choosing the Right AC for Your Home

Choosing the right air conditioning system for your home can be daunting, but with the right information, it can become a breeze. The most important factor to consider when selecting an air conditioning system is the size of your home. An AC system that is too small will not be able to cool your entire home and will constantly run, causing it to wear out quicker, while an AC system that is too large will result in higher energy bills and inconsistent temperatures.

To determine the right sized unit for your home, you will need to calculate the square footage of your living space. This can be done by multiplying the length of your room by its width. Once you have the square footage of your entire living space, you can compare it to the cooling capacity of the AC unit you are considering purchasing. Ideally, your AC system should have a cooling capacity of 20 BTUs (British Thermal Units) per square foot of living space.

A 1,500-2000 square feet home will typically need a 3-ton AC, with a cooling capacity of around 36,000 BTUs/hr.

It is also important to consider the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of the AC unit you are considering. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the unit will be, resulting in lower energy bills.

Finding the Right HVAC Specialist

First and foremost, it's important to work with someone local. Not only does this make it easier for them to get to your property quickly in case of an emergency, but someone who is local is more likely to be established in the community and have a good reputation. You can ask friends and neighbors for recommendations or check online reviews to see what others have to say about their services.

When it comes to licensing, insurance, and bonding, don't compromise. A licensed professional has undergone the necessary training and certification to ensure they know what they're doing. Insurance protects you in case of any accidents or damage that occur during the installation process. Bonding provides you with additional protection in case the contractor fails to meet their obligations. It's imperative to ensure the HVAC specialist you choose is licensed, insured, and bonded.

In addition to these key points, you'll want to find someone with experience working with your specific type of AC unit. Every unit has unique quirks and features, so choosing an HVAC specialist who understands yours is important.
